About Siargao

Siargao (Shar-Gaw) is an Island on the East Coast of the Philippines. It is in the shape of a pear or a tear-drop and is part of the Province of Surigao del Norte. It has a land area of about 437 square kilometres.

Siargao is situated at a coordinate of 9°52′N 126°03′E. It is composed of municipalities of Burgos, Dapa, Del Carmen, General Luna, San Benito, Pilar,San Isidro, Santa Monica and Socorro.

Siargao contains the largest mangrove forest in Mindanao, at Del Carmen. Having these beautiful mangroves allows for some excellent adventures through various streams and lagoons. The island is greatly influenced by the winds and currents coming uninterrupted from the Pacific Ocean, intensified by the Mindanao current running westward through the Siargao Strait.

Offshore in General Luna, a classic tropical island called Guyam Island lies protected within its surrounding coral reef with dozens of coconut palms dressed in the center circle of the island. Next to Guyam is it’s big brother called Daku Island which translated means “Big Island”. Off to the right of Daku Island lies a shining white sand bar island called Pansukian or Naked island.

The Island’s Pacific-facing reefs are situated on the edge of the Philippine Trench, and the extremely deep offshore waters assure the ocean swells have undiluted power when they encounter the many coral and rock reefs. Siargao has excellent surfing conditions, particularly during the southwest “habagat” monsoon from August to November, when the prevailing wind is offshore.

Our humble resort is situated in the Municipality of General Luna which is home to the Famous Cloud 9 surf break. It is actually in front of another slightly unknown surf break called Tuason. It is a quick left that has some powerful and long breaks and huge barrels when it is working. It is more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Like the rest of the Philippines, Siargao’s residents are what makes it more fun here. There is a population of about 150,000 people on the island. The people are extremely friendly to tourists and most can speak up to four different languages. These languages include, English, Filipino (Tagalog), Visayan and their island dialect, Siargao-non. Hang out for a bit and experience their kind and friendly spirits!

Arrive

You can get to the island either by air or by sea. The most convenient would be via air as the flight lands directly on the island. We can shuttle you to the resort, which is about 30 minutes from the Airport.

You can get to the island through plane via the City of Cebu.
Cebu Pacific is the only airline to fly to the island, but has a flight everyday on most times of the year. On certain times of the year they have two flights a day.
The flight from Cebu takes about 50 minutes to arrive in Siargao.
If your are coming from Manila, you would need to book a flight to Cebu and connect a flight to Siargao from there.

You may choose to get to the island via Sea. If that is the case, your port of entry would be via Surigao City boat port.
So you can fly to anywhere in Mindanao Mainland and take a bus to Surigao City. From there you can hop on a boat to get to the island.
Many of the boats get easily booked so you have to get there at least one hour before departure time.
If you miss the boats to Dapa, you may get lucky and get another boat to a neighbouring city.
Take note if you are planning on taking this sea route from Manila, you would need to spend a night on Surigao as the last boat to Siargao leaves right as your plane arrives.

Get Around the Island

Most can get around by hopping on Habal-habals. Motorcycles that can fit up to 4 or sometimes 5 people on the bike seat! Rates depend on distance as well as the time of day.

You can rent a motorbike for a whole day if you wish to enjoy the scenery of the island on a bike. The thrill and views are amazing!

You may also rent a van or car if you would like the comfort for the whole group. Again, rates depend on distance and the car that’s being used.

You may take boat trips to different parts of the island as well as neighbouring islands which you can explore!

Harana means Serenade in Filipino. Let us woo you.

Tips

Here are some helpful tips to make your trip here even more enjoyable.
  • Bring Cash the nearest ATM is 20 minutes away and
  • Bring small change. It will be easier to pay for small habal habal rides, snacks and fruits.
  • Use a lot of sun block. The sun is hot this side of the world!

Gawad Kalinga Programs

Gawad Kalinga is a award winning Non-Profit organisation
working to eradicate poverty for 5 Million Families by 2024.

Gawad Kalinga or GK is a non-profit organisation that is working to end poverty for 5 Million Families by 2024. They do this using a multi-levelled approach in empowering the poorest of the poor. GK is non-partisan and partners up with LGUs as well as private individuals and companies. These parties help by donating land, money or services in helping the poorest of the poor.

Initially GK was known for the homes they were building through volunteer efforts and donations given by many companies. When they approach a community, the people of the community have to attend values formation classes. These classes help teach these less fortunate people values such as Hard work, a sense of community, caring for the environment, and more. At the same time, these individuals have to do their part and give some sweat equity and help in building the community houses. Based on their performance, they are awarded a house where their family can live in.

It doesn’t end there. Once they are rewarded homes, they also have to pay it forward and continue to help the rest of their community by continuing with their service. This is so that others can also feel the same empowerment which they have received through their efforts.

It doesn’t end there for GK either. After the shelter program, they continue to empower their beneficiaries by providing them with channels for better health, education, skills for livelihood opportunities and skills for food availability.  It is only when the impoverished people are able to empower themselves, help themselves and have the confidence to help the others in the community is the poverty cycle ended.

Vernacular Architecture

Visit us and see what  modern vernacular architecture looks and feels like.

The Harana Surf Resort of Siaragao was designed by Tropiks Design Studio head architect, Melvin Patawaran. After the design was presented to us, the Harana team had a few questions to ask him. Below is the interview.

What inspired you to become an architect?

I had skills in Drawing & Math so the natural course for me is to pursue Architecture.

Describe your architectural style.

Innovative Tropical Designs. Client-based designing

What are the biggest influences in your style?

The Heritage Architecture in the Philippines, Culture of People & climate

What was your inspiration for the Harana Surf Resort spaces?

Vernacular Siargao Domestic Architecture particularly in Salvacion Vilage.

What did you see in the vernacular siargao architecture that made it different from the rest of the Philippine architecture?

Seaside domestic architecture but adjacent to mainland community that means it has easy access to main road. The longboat interior concept with steep roof, dark spaces with penetrations of ray of light.

What do you think makes Siargao as a venue different from the rest of the places in the Philippines?

The isolation, surf culture, lush hilly greeneries, mangrove & reef beaches, Combine them together & you’ll not find it anywhere else. Plus, thedown to earth local culture.

What did you incorporate in the Harana spaces?

Spacious, long, continuous, dark space w/ rays of light coming in. On site, organic formation of buildings oriented towards the sea conducive to nature contemplation & promotes interaction among guests.

If there was one thing you would like to achieve most through your work, what would it be?

Modern Vernacular Architecture, distinctive to the place that gives identity, pride & up-to date functional bldg. performance to local needs. In this way, it inspires the users to perform their activities
