Siargao (Shar-Gaw) is an Island on the East Coast of the Philippines. It is in the shape of a pear or a tear-drop and is part of the Province of Surigao del Norte. It has a land area of about 437 square kilometres.
Siargao is situated at a coordinate of 9°52′N 126°03′E. It is composed of municipalities of Burgos, Dapa, Del Carmen, General Luna, San Benito, Pilar,San Isidro, Santa Monica and Socorro.
Siargao contains the largest mangrove forest in Mindanao, at Del Carmen. Having these beautiful mangroves allows for some excellent adventures through various streams and lagoons. The island is greatly influenced by the winds and currents coming uninterrupted from the Pacific Ocean, intensified by the Mindanao current running westward through the Siargao Strait.
Offshore in General Luna, a classic tropical island called Guyam Island lies protected within its surrounding coral reef with dozens of coconut palms dressed in the center circle of the island. Next to Guyam is it’s big brother called Daku Island which translated means “Big Island”. Off to the right of Daku Island lies a shining white sand bar island called Pansukian or Naked island.
The Island’s Pacific-facing reefs are situated on the edge of the Philippine Trench, and the extremely deep offshore waters assure the ocean swells have undiluted power when they encounter the many coral and rock reefs. Siargao has excellent surfing conditions, particularly during the southwest “habagat” monsoon from August to November, when the prevailing wind is offshore.
Our humble resort is situated in the Municipality of General Luna which is home to the Famous Cloud 9 surf break. It is actually in front of another slightly unknown surf break called Tuason. It is a quick left that has some powerful and long breaks and huge barrels when it is working. It is more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Like the rest of the Philippines, Siargao’s residents are what makes it more fun here. There is a population of about 150,000 people on the island. The people are extremely friendly to tourists and most can speak up to four different languages. These languages include, English, Filipino (Tagalog), Visayan and their island dialect, Siargao-non. Hang out for a bit and experience their kind and friendly spirits!
You can get to the island either by air or by sea. The most convenient would be via air as the flight lands directly on the island. We can shuttle you to the resort, which is about 30 minutes from the Airport.
Gawad Kalinga is a award winning Non-Profit organisation
working to eradicate poverty for 5 Million Families by 2024.
Gawad Kalinga or GK is a non-profit organisation that is working to end poverty for 5 Million Families by 2024. They do this using a multi-levelled approach in empowering the poorest of the poor. GK is non-partisan and partners up with LGUs as well as private individuals and companies. These parties help by donating land, money or services in helping the poorest of the poor.
Initially GK was known for the homes they were building through volunteer efforts and donations given by many companies. When they approach a community, the people of the community have to attend values formation classes. These classes help teach these less fortunate people values such as Hard work, a sense of community, caring for the environment, and more. At the same time, these individuals have to do their part and give some sweat equity and help in building the community houses. Based on their performance, they are awarded a house where their family can live in.
It doesn’t end there. Once they are rewarded homes, they also have to pay it forward and continue to help the rest of their community by continuing with their service. This is so that others can also feel the same empowerment which they have received through their efforts.
It doesn’t end there for GK either. After the shelter program, they continue to empower their beneficiaries by providing them with channels for better health, education, skills for livelihood opportunities and skills for food availability. It is only when the impoverished people are able to empower themselves, help themselves and have the confidence to help the others in the community is the poverty cycle ended.
